EDUCATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Welcome photographer friends!
Whether you are just starting or a few years in, I am so glad you are here and it is my hope that this page will serve as a blessing to your business. I remember so vividly my first moment where I thought, "wow, this is something I really want to pursue." I also remember the immediate panic right after that thought because I had no idea where to start! I had all the excitement and passion in the world for photography so I spent hours upon hours reading and researching what to do! As a former high school teacher, I understand the importance and value of education, but there is so much out there that it can become overwhelming! I believe in keeping it simple, incredible client experiences, and capturing joyful images! I also believe you do not have to do it all or break the bank in order to be successful! I'm so glad you are here and I am so excited to share my tips with you!

hi, fellow photogs!

TOOLS & RESOURCES

Let's be real here for a moment. Photography is expensive! It does require a hefty start up cost, but you don't have to have it all to be a great photographer! Below you will find my gear, tools, and resources that I use as well as some money saving tips and advice on where to start.

CAMERA

This is the most obvious yet difficult decision to make when you are just starting out! It is also a challenge when you decide you need to replace or upgrade your camera as well! The first choice you have to make is whether you want to be a Nikon shooter or Cannon shooter. While some photographers will swear that their brand is superior, it is my honest opinion that you can't go wrong with either! It is just personal preference and often times a matter of what you start with will naturally feel more comfortable for you! Either way, you don't have to have the latest and most expensive camera to be great! If you are on a budget, I strongly recommend looking into a used camera to get you started!

Lenses are where you can really spend a fortune quickly, but again, you don't have to have them all! While it is certainly fun to fill your bag full of the best lenses, they definitely are worth researching to make sure you need them and don't just want them! The lens I recommend to all photographers is the 50mm lens. Whether you are looking to shoot weddings or portraits, the 50mm is the perfect lens to start with and one of my most used lenses! Cannon and Nikon shooters alike have affordable options for the 50mm. The next two lenses I recommend for a wedding photographer is a 24-70 to have versatility for tight spaces, and the 105mm for ring and detail shots. As a portrait photographer, I would say don't invest in the 105 but rather an 85mm next.

LAPTOP & DESKTOP

Alright friend, this is another real talk moment. It will probably shock the entire creative industry when I say this, but I am not a Mac user! Gasp! I have always been a PC girl, probably because I grew up in an IT home filled with PCs. So that being said, my computer recommendations come with PC users in mind. I think it is easy to look at the photography world and think, "I have to own a MacBook Pro to be successful" and that is just not true! While Macs are great if you are a PC user and want to continue to be, there are great computers out there for photographers also! After spending a ton of time researching and figuring out what is most important when it comes to a computer for a photographer, here is what I use! I also have a whole blog post dedicated to explaining what you should look for when you purchase a computer as a photographer. Another thing to remember, is laptops are more expensive! If you are on a tight budget, a desktop will get you better performance for a lot less, but you have to consider your lifestyle when making this choice! It took me a long time to finally invest in both!

BAGS

When it comes to camera  bags, there are so many and it can be hard to choose! That's why I have too many! It really depends on what you are looking to do and how you like to carry bags. Sometimes you may want to have a book bag, other times it may be better to have a travel friendly bag. It is totally up to you, but the bags I own have all held up to lots of wear and tear and travel!

WORKFLOW & OTHER TOOLS

This is where you can quickly feel like you need it all! There are so many tools out there now for photographers and while some are essential, others are certainly things you can live without, especially when you are first starting! These are the things I feel are essential or have made my life so much easier and my work so much more efficient, that it is worth the investment!

BOOKS

The English Major in me has to recommend my favorite business books! Whether or not reading is your cup of tea, it always helps to read the ideas of business experts! I never saw the value in this at the very beginning, but running a photography business is much more than just taking beautiful images! Here are books that are helpful for marketing, pricing, and balancing the many demands of being a business owner and human being!
